Hi Gary and welcome.
To answer your questions - the easiest first:
Today there are 270 registered users but only and handful of actives.
Cork users I'm not sure about (I'm Galway-based) but this is one way to find out. Thanks for posting here. You can also check out
this thread for locals, and introduce yourself too if you wish
Is this the official Irish JUG?
Technically, I suppose not...
In my opinion, yes!
Although, it says in the
JUG FAQ "You are a recognized Joomla! User Group. There is no such thing as an "official Joomla! User Group." Joomla! user groups are independent entities not authorized, sponsored, or otherwise approved by Joomla!" so maybe I'm over enthusiastic.
You can
track the (rather slow) progress here.
What doesn't appear is a skype conversation between Rob and ot2sen, I believe, when we were given the go-ahead for Joomla! User Group Dublin and given instructions for including the trademark info etc. We were told Joomla! User Group Ireland was not valid as there are no countries allowed...The
List of Registered JUGs says differently however. Case in point - our friends from JoomlaNI.
So technically we appear as
Joomla! User Group Dublin. The site, at the moment, has a feed from this forum.
I don't know if you follow or partake in any of the politics surrounding the Joomla project worldwide...if you do, you'll know that the organisation and communication, not to mention respect, can sometimes be lacking within the community. This is why I stopped following a lot of it. I simply had trouble determining how it all affected me and my future using Joomla, and worse, how I could affect it. I'm guessing our waiting months for a response is a good example of what internal conflict can result in. We went ahead anyway.
This discussion about Open Source Matters
such as this one, alludes to how things have been in the past.
I think the reality is there are a growing number of businesses and individuals using Joomla in Ireland, which naturally leads to the need for support and skill-sharing.
Joomla's online communities are very active and accessible, but the only way we thought we could get together with other Irish users was this way.
It's been slow but steady. We had one Joomla meeting in Galway and are due another soon. I would definitely be into a Cork meet sometime in the future.
